History of Athens Farmers Market Ohio
In the dawn of 1972, something beautiful was about to bloom in Athens, Ohio. In the midst of routine conversations, an idea was kindled in the minds of a few Athenians. A city official, Harold Dodd, and John Millar, a district conservationist at the Soil and Water Conservation District office in Athens, envisaged the city needed a farmers market. And thus, the Athens Farmers Market (AFM) was conceived.
At that time, some farmers had begun vending their produce from uptown metered parking spaces. This did not sit well with Donald Barrett, the Mayor of Athens from 1972 to 1984, who urged the farmers to find another site. Subsequently, the Mayor supported the initiative of Millar and Dodd to establish a farmers market. Marian Keller, Ruth Richmond, and County Extension Agent Kenneth Ackerman were among the trailblazers who spearheaded the establishment of the market.
The Ideal Setting: East State Park
The East State park and recreation area, a former Ohio University airport, was chosen as the site of the nascent farmers market. The city had converted the hangars into various city offices, including those of the arts and parks. Now, a part of the former runway was to serve a fresh purpose – the newly envisioned farmers market.
By-laws and rules were drawn up to govern the operation of the market. These rules stipulated that only agricultural products could be sold, and only by the producers themselves. This fundamental rule still stands tall at AFM. The market commenced operation on a warm summer day in 1972 with a modest count of three producers. By the end of the season, the participation spiked, boasting of a dozen vendors.
The Growth and Evolution of AFM
In 1973, the market was open from April till Thanksgiving with a minimal fee of $5 a day, capped at $25 for the season. A Wednesday market was soon added to the schedule. With Ed Rannow as the first manager and Larry Payne as the first president, the market began to thrive.
Over the years, the AFM’s popularity surged. Vendors expanded their offerings, adding bedding plants, eggs, and baked goods to the traditional roster of fruits and vegetables. By mid-90s, the AFM was home to 50 vendors and was ready to operate all-year round by 1995-96. However, with the construction of a new community recreation center in 1998, the market had to shift to the University Mall.
